History

1905
On 8 August 1905, Léon-Jean Scheerders together with his wife Camilla van Kerchove founded the company "Pannen- en Steenbakkerijen van Sint-Nicolaas" (Sint-Nicolaas Tile and Brickworks).
1906
Work starts on developing the first claypit, and the brickworks begin operating with a Hoffman type round kiln.
1907
The cement tile factory opens its doors.
1908
The company changes its name into "L. Scheerders & Cie".
1923
The start of fibre cement material production begins.
1928
The company changes its name into "Naamloze Vennootschap Scheerders van Kerchove's Verenigde Fabrieken (SVK)".

1933
Marble mosaic and blue and white synthetic stone make their appearance.
1937
Paul Verhaert takes over the day-to-day running of the business from his father-in-law, Léon Scheerders.
1939
The start of facing brick production .

1947
The Decora division is founded.
1960
The sixties begins with now policy-makers: Piet Verhaert as Chairman-Managing Director and
Leo De Schryver as Administrative Manager.
1970
The Distribution department start, which devotes its energies specifically to the sale of ancillary materials.
1977
Installation of the Gremigni production line for automated manufacture of fittings for slates and corrugated sheets.
1979
A new production line for the Architectural Concrete department arrives.
1990
The new computer-controlled production line accelerates the manufacture of NT fibre cement materials.
1997
SVK builds a new production line to coat fibre cement products in an environmentally friendly way.
2000
In the year that brings in the new millennium, the triumvirate of Michel Verhaert, Walter Verhaert and Leo De Schryver takes the lead of the day-to-day running of the company.
2005
SVK celebrates its 100 years anniversary. 2005 means also the beginning of a major investing programm in the slates department, the preparatory activities for the construction of a brand-new finishing line get started.
In the bookbindery, the installation of a new collecting and gluing line get started.
2006
In the course of 2006, the preparatory activities for the installation of a new facing brick plant are commencing.
2007
Since the beginning of 2007, the new finishing line for slates is operational.
2008
Michel Verhaert resigns his function as Managing Director.
Walter Verhaert and Leo De Schryver lead the day-to-day running of the company.
Today, SVK is not only the abbreviation of "Scheerders van Kerchove", but is also synonymous with Service, Know-how and Quality.

SVK is located in the centre of Sint-Niklaas beside the Antwerp-Ghent
railway line, on a site covering 140 hectares.
The product range consists of four product groups:
- Fibre cement
- Ardonit, Montana and Fasonit slates
- Neptunus corrugated sheets
- Novex underroof sheets
- Ornimat and Decomat façade cladding boards
- Clay materials
- Artisan hand-molded facing bricks
- Concrete materials
- Gigant architectonic concrete
SVK building materials are sold at builders' merchants in countries including Belgium, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scandinavia, Lithuania, Denmark and Poland.
Besides the production and the merchandising of building materials, an industrial bookbindery also belongs to SVK's activities.
